Kiss goodbye to smoking on Valentine’s Day

Smokers in Nottinghamshire are being encouraged to surprise their loved ones this Valentine's Day, Monday 14 February, by stopping smoking and giving them a fresh breath kiss.

Most people want to look and feel their best on Valentine's evening.  Stopping smoking can see drastic improvements to peoples health, confidence and appearance.

Smokers will quickly notice the benefits in their appearance.  Their bad breath will disappear and taste buds will improve.  The stale smell of tobacco will disappear from hair, skin and clothes.  Skin will look healthier with fewer wrinkles.

Fertility and sexual performance is also affected by smoking.  The risk of impotence increases by fifty percent for men in their thirties and forties.  Female smokers are three times more likely to take more than a year to conceive.

NHS Nottinghamshire County wants to remind people that free help and support is available for when they are ready to quit.

Lynn Robinson, Stop Smoking Lead for NHS Nottinghamshire County said: "Quitting smoking will improve your appearance and general health.  You'll also save money, which means you could get your loved one an extra special Valentines present!  Most smokers want to give up their habit, however we know that quitting is not easy.

"You're four times more likely to quit with free NHS support, rather than willpower alone.  Call your GP, visit one of our participating pharmacies or ring the New Leaf, our stop smoking helpline on 0800 389 7712."

Vouchers for Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) are also available to help people kick the habit, with gum and patches combating nicotine cravings.  This service is free of charge for those who do not pay prescription charges.  For those who do, it costs £7.20 for a 12 week course.
