April 1 sees major changes to NHS structure

At the stroke of midnight on March 31, the way the NHS is organised locally is to change from a single Primary Care Trust (PCT) to five clinical commissioning groups (CCGs).

As of April 1, each of the CCGs will be responsible for assessing local health needs and then planning and paying for the local health services in their communities. From this point onwards, groups of local GPs and other key healthcare professionals will have full control of the local health services that were previously managed centrally by the PCT, which will be abolished simultaneously as the CCGs legally take control.

NHS Continuing Healthcare - deadline approaching

The Department of Health has announced the introduction of deadlines for requests to assess eligibility for NHS Continuing Healthcare funding. The first deadline is on 30 September 2012 and covers care carried out between 1 April 2004 and 31 March 2011.

NHS Continuing Healthcare funding pays for healthcare provided for some people either in care homes or in their own home. Not everyone is eligible for the funding and each case is assessed individually. Many people receive relevant care for some time before they or their families apply for the funding. It is these backdates claims for which deadlines have now been introduced.

The deadlines only apply to periods of care which have not been assessed previously and where there is evidence that the individual should have been assessed for eligibility for NHS continuing healthcare funding by NHS Nottingham City and Nottinghamshire County. For care carried out between 1 April 2011 and 31 March 2012 the deadline is 31 March 2013.

For more information about how to notify the primary care trust of a request for assessment in Nottinghamshire contact the Continuing Care Team on 01623 673837 or visit http://www.nottspct.nhs.uk/
