Healthy living advice
Improving the health of the people of Nottinghamshire is one of the principal aims of the PCT. This is done by a combination of:
- Health protection eg vaccinating children against infectious diseases
- Health promotion eg supporting people to make healthy choices, like not smoking or exercising regularly
- Health services eg ensuring access to primary care (like a GP or community nurse) and hospital care when necessary
Within the PCT, the Public Health Directorate ensures that health needs are assessed across the whole population, then works closely with the rest of the organisation to promote healthy messages and ensure health services are planned and put in place. Part of this process involves investigating why people’s health is different in different parts of the county. Some differences can be explained by biological or genetic factors (eg death rates are higher in older people than younger people). However, if the differences are due to social or economic reasons, then this is known as an inequality in health, and the PCT works closely with its non NHS partners (eg Local Authorities) to address these inequalities.
The information and advice within this section details the services that we provide but also aims to encourage people to make healthy choices in all aspects of their life. We are all responsible for playing a role in looking after our health and small changes in lifestyle can often lead to huge health benefits. This particularly applies to not smoking, eating a healthy diet and exercising regularly.
